		<description>Jayoon Choi is a London-based artist. ︎︎︎ Wanna talk to her?
Jayoon’s work is about&#38;nbsp;︎︎︎ What does it mean to be human?
&#38;nbsp;︎︎︎ How does one build the world for themselves? &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; ︎︎︎What value do we possess or do not possess to be human?&#38;nbsp;︎︎︎ Seeking a tangible form or an experience to convey such questions
Using︎︎︎ drawing as a tool to actualise the investigation (of the above questions)
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; ︎︎︎ Automatic drawing, moving image &#38;amp; installation
Longer version&#38;nbsp;

	︎︎︎&#38;nbsp;Jayoon’s practice explores the gap between inner human experience and the act of
translating it into tangible form. She gravitates toward moments that resist language: experiences that are either too raw, too isolated, or reduced to clichéd expressions.
Through automatic processes, she investigates the vast internal landscape buried beneath our physical forms, questioning how much our bodies truly reveal about who we are. Using herself as both subject and testing ground, she engages bodily metaphors to create visual embodiments of what cannot be spoken.This embodiment takes a paradoxical form: Jayoon uses fragments of the human body to materialise intangible internal experiences. Her approach deliberately strips away constructed identifiers such as time, gender, and culture, depicting androgynous figures to uncover the essential force that inhabits the physical body.

	This inquiry echoes the Buddhist hwadu (話頭): "What moves this corpse?" —a question that drives her investigation into the ineffable nature of being human.Text extends this philosophical inquiry, serving as both seed and tool in her creative process. She weaves together personal reflections, poetry, lyrics, philosophical writings, and religious texts as foundational elements for her work. Through this interdisciplinary methodology, Jayoon attempts to embrace and speculate on shared human experiences that transcend all differences.
This embodiment takes a paradoxical form: Jayoon uses fragments of the human body to materialise intangible internal experiences.

Jayoon is also&#38;nbsp;
︎︎︎A Senior lecturer at&#38;nbsp;the Illustration Programme at Camberwell College of Arts and an Associate Lecturer at the&#38;nbsp;MA Graphic Communication Design at Central Saint Martins.

My fascination lies in

how drawing in VR translates the hand movements of the drawing process into sculpture and structures 3D space.
In Rock Study 25, I used VR Gravity Sketch to map the conceptual interior of a rock. The act of drawing in VR creates the illusion of being inside the drawing while structuring it. This approach allows the subject to be explored at a skewed composition that would otherwise be impossible. This immersive creative process expands the limits of representation that may exist in a conventional 2D drawing approach and enables a more expansive observation of the subject. Through slit-scan techniques, I reinterpreted hand-drawn studies of the rock and composed the final image in Blender and Photoshop to reflect my observation of it.
This creative process explores how VR spatial drawing can connect with traditional hand drawing, aiming to retain the delicacy of observational drawing through digital tools and present it in physical prints.

'As a poet, you'll see preciousness even in a rock on a street corner.' I encountered this idea as a child and found it baffling. ‘What is so special about rocks? A rock was just a rock!’ So I kicked every rock I passed.

As my creative practice has evolved, I've begun to perceive the world's delicate complexity compressed into solid forms. Each rock carries the memory of molten magma, preserving the record of its slow cooling and the stages of fragmentation. I find myself imagining what mysteries lie beneath these weathered surfaces. A rock is never just a rock; it holds the entire history of Earth within its fractured geometry.

Here I share a selection of rock study drawings, with more to follow.

- If we had already arrived in the future, where every unknown question of the future had been answered, how would creativity respond to it? -This was the project brief to contemplate, and in response, I started magnifying the soil, stone, dust and particles gathered around my studio space. It opened up the concept of the life cycle by shifting away from a human-centric perspective, instead of ‘seeing’ the universe that can be found by looking into the trivial around us. In a handful of soil lies the sedimented remains of those who lived and passed before us, leaving behind their accumulated bodies. Though the future may not be tangible yet, we can envision its eventual arrival. By returning to the very ground beneath our feet, we can anticipate a warm reunion with our predecessors. My future is laid in the soil within my hands. The “Future Perfect” project attempts to provide a glimpse into the future in multi-interdisciplinary exhibitions and events from literature: Sujin Seo, Cheon Seonran, art: Danilo Bastione, Nikolai Vogel and music: Taehun Lee &#38;amp;&#38;nbsp;Ardhi Engl.The exhibition runs between 17 May - 2 June 2024 in Ebenböckhaus.

	‘Good night, sweet dreams’ . One says this phrase for granted at the end of the day. Yet this very mundane is an unachievable one for those who are in threat of their very life in every moment. Until all of our dreams become a little sweeter- Sending solidarity to Gaza, Ukraine and for all who are in suffering.

In August 2023, Jayoon undertook a brief residency at Horanggasy Creative Studio. She spent most of her time wandering the residential streets of Yangnim and Gwangju at large. An anonymous elderly woman, perhaps in her sixties, passed by her, and suddenly, as if experiencing déjà vu, something surfaced that she may have left behind when she departed Korea in the 90s. Something familiar yet corrupted, something both intimate and alien, embodied in the figure of an anonymous elderly lady -아줌마- who could perpetually pass by unnoticed.

Afterwards, this encounter, like glimpsing a ghost that doesn't exist in the world yet has always been there, inspired her to develop a ghostly slit-scan imaging aesthetic that captures these fleeting, spectral presences.

	The Theory of Concentric Spheres. Yan Tan Tether. Group exhibition. Huddersfield, The UK (Funded by Arts Council England)In 2019, Jayoon was commissioned to create a visual response to the theory of the concentric sphere, commonly known as the Hollow Earth theory. Through the lens of the four fundamental forces of nature, Jayoon explored the connection between humans and the planet, recognising that both are composed of atoms.

This idea suggests that the Earth is hollow, just as the self is, echoing Buddhist philosophy, which speaks of emptiness at the core of existence. This led to deeper questions: What lies at the centre of oneself? What is the journey toward the very origin of being? What forms the unshakable core?

Walk into Gravity draws from Buddhist philosophy and meditation techniques in response to the concentric sphere theory. It examines the pursuit of emptiness through automatic drawing, intentionally disrupting habitual movement. By engaging the less dominant left hand to hack the dominant right hand, the process unlocks uncharted layers of expression, generating an unprecedented creative response in the search for emptiness.

	The Radio performance, Wire Arts Experiment vol.2
Hackesche Höfe, Berlin, GermanyIn collaboration with Jae Kyung Kim

Jae Kyung and Jayoon developed one of their MA group projects, The Radio at RCA, into an interactive installation and presented it in Berlin.
The piece exposes the vast amount of personal information we upload online without realising it can be publicly accessed. Though we experience a sense of agency when reading data, hearing our private information broadcast as sound through radio waves makes our digital vulnerability impossible to ignore.
