The Theory of Concentric Spheres. Yan Tan Tether. Group exhibition. Huddersfield, The UK (Funded by Arts Council England)

In 2019, Jayoon was commissioned to create a visual response to the theory of the concentric sphere, commonly known as the Hollow Earth theory. Through the lens of the four fundamental forces of nature, Jayoon explored the connection between humans and the planet, recognising that both are composed of atoms.

This idea suggests that the Earth is hollow, just as the self is, echoing Buddhist philosophy, which speaks of emptiness at the core of existence. This led to deeper questions: What lies at the centre of oneself? What is the journey toward the very origin of being? What forms the unshakable core?

Walk into Gravity draws from Buddhist philosophy and meditation techniques in response to the concentric sphere theory. It examines the pursuit of emptiness through automatic drawing, intentionally disrupting habitual movement. By engaging the less dominant left hand to hack the dominant right hand, the process unlocks uncharted layers of expression, generating an unprecedented creative response in the search for emptiness.
