Under The Surface. Group exhibition, Horanggasy ArtPolygon/ Gwangju, The Republic of Korea

In August 2023, Jayoon undertook a brief residency at Horanggasy Creative Studio. She spent most of her time wandering the residential streets of Yangnim and Gwangju at large. An anonymous elderly woman, perhaps in her sixties, passed by her, and suddenly, as if experiencing déjà vu, something surfaced that she may have left behind when she departed Korea in the 90s. Something familiar yet corrupted, something both intimate and alien, embodied in the figure of an anonymous elderly lady -아줌마- who could perpetually pass by unnoticed.

Afterwards, this encounter, like glimpsing a ghost that doesn't exist in the world yet has always been there, inspired her to develop a ghostly slit-scan imaging aesthetic that captures these fleeting, spectral presences.
